I began reading news reports and quickly realized that the situation was indeed dire. Predictions of a nuclear meltdown and references to Chernobyl scared me. I urged all of my friends to leave, regardless of how close or not they were to the Daiichi power plant. They were getting similar urgings from their own family members and loved ones. In Ottawa, I further immersed myself in coverage of the events in Fukushima, almost completely dropping out of society and spending over 16 hours a day online.

Soon hundreds of people had logged onto my video as I continued passing information on Twitter to people at work, walking home, or outside of Japan altogether. I kept at this for the days following, taking few breaks even to sleep as constant aftershocks would soon bring me back to my desk. Together we learned of the tsunami and the terrible damage, the towns washed away into the ocean. Together we learned of the problems with the nuclear reactors in Fukushima. Together we learned that the entire world had heard of the disaster and that planes were on their way to help those in need.

While we can use ordinary mobile phone functions, we've barely been able to operate emergency functions. Batteries run out as we fumble with our phones and the vast majority of us have given up trying to use them. Very few people of my generation use the internet in the first place, and as power is needed to get online, we haven't been able to use it during power cuts.
