Slip 3 is the same as Slip 2, except that it contains organic additives. Slip 4 is the same as Slip 2 but contains added SO,. Slip 5 has both organic and sulfate additives, showing that both are required for good slip control. Addition of a commercial organic material+ corrects this problem. For our work, however, we continue to use the feldspar convention, since the properties of soda and potash feldspar are more familiar to everyone and the calculations seem more meaningful. My first introduction to the advantages of rational analysis was several years ago through an English ceramist who had just come to Canada. He used the mica convention and had prepared tables to simplify his calculations. Later, when we settled on the feldspar convention, we set up similar tables. I think this is the key to the use of this tool-with tables prepared in advance, calculations are simple and speedy; without them, the calculations become tedious.
