At the turn to the twentieth century, images of manly cooking emerged, not only in cookbooks directed at men, but also in literature and popular culture. In the image of the solitary hero frying flapjacks over the campfire, or the hardboiled detective subsisting on liverwurst sandwiches, authors expressed an ideal masculinity centered on radical independence from women.

American Cookery is notable not only because of its attempt to define a national cuisine, but also for claiming that women actively engage on many levels, thanks to their work and their expertise, in building the nation. The second edition, lacking the first seventeen pages of commentary that made the first edition so remarkable, was more frequently reprinted and plagiarized over the next few decades, relieving the text of some of its political potential. But the second edition had its own political moments.

In this passage, in which everyone is supposed to get a break to enjoy the fruits of their labors, the mother still works and serves the others. Her labor is cast within a different economy of care and love that is supposed to be its own reward. The idyllic description of rural living, with a mother working in the home rather than in the fields, and children sent off to school, represents a middle-class ideal of an agricultural society rather than the tougher reality then predominant among smallholders.
