If the titanium/scandium 357 Magnum kicks, then this one really kicks. Loaded with 44 Specials, it becomes an easy shooting and very portable big-bore six-gun. Two or three 44 Special rounds, followed by the same number of 44 Magnums, afford a lot of versatility. If you are in territory where a large angry beast could be encountered, load all 44 Magnums. In the 1980s, S&W briefly resurrected the 44 Special in both the blued Model 24-3 and stainless steel Model 624. Smith & Wesson introduced the 357 Magnum in 1935, the 44 Magnum in 1955, the 41 Magnum in 1964, and then faded into the shadows as the 454 Casull, 480 Ruger, and 475 Linebaugh arrived from other manufacturers.
The Great Westerns looked enough like Colts that pictures of real Colts were used in the original advertising; they also incorporated some genuine Colt parts from the Colt factory. At first they were offered with Colt-style firing-pin hammers, or a floating, frame-mounted firing pin. The standard Great Western was a 5 1⁄2-inch blued and case-colored 45 Colt. Also available were other barrel lengths, 4-3⁄4 and 7-1⁄2 inches, as well as other chamberings: 44 Special, 44-40, 38 Special, 357 Magnum, 357 Atomic, 44 Magnum, 44 Special and 22 Long Rifle.
The 686, available in both six-shot and seven-shot versions, remains in production and deserves a serious look by anyone contemplating the purchase of a 357 Magnum. The early 44 Magnums of 1956 are known as pre-29s. Custom stocks are by Roy Fishpaw. The 44 Special had been dropped in 1966 and almost immediately people began trying to convince Smith & Wesson to bring it back. At about the same time, a freelance writer by the name of Skeeter Skelton joined the staff of Shooting Times magazine and soon began writing about the 44 Special, and urging its return.
