The problem with this idea, however, is that it prefigures the act and practice outside language. Rorty wishes to appeal to history when he says we must use only sentences that have paid their way; however, this reading of history is imagined outside language. Rorty’s notion of “the good action” seems, paradoxically, to be both humanist and pre-structuralist as well as post-structuralist. Rorty actually says that the accomplished contemporary pragmatists, in doing what they do, are “simply people who [are] good at being human” (xxxix).
Rorty’s point is that there can be no universal criterion as we create criterion in the course of creating a practice. The problem with literary intellectuals of the scientific kind, for Rorty, “is their inability to . . agree on what would count as resolving disputes, on the criterion to which all sides must appeal” (xli). For Rorty, once a criterion is agreed upon, “vigorous argumentation” can follow—and things can be done (see also, 1982:xlii). Thus, for Rorty, all discourses have an equal status—none are privy to the Truth; rather, each has a role in “trying to cope with various bits of the universe” (xliii).
Her specialty is seeing similarities and differences between great big pictures, between attempts to see how things hang together (xl). This genealogical-type approach involves the “bookish intellectual” in what Rorty refers to as the “literary-historical-anthropological-political merry-go-round” of thought (xxxviii). The pragmatist does not go beyond this interdisciplinary mode. There are no “transdisciplinary, transcultural, ahistorical criteria” (1982:xxxviii). Thus, the realist Philosophers with their “scientific” discourse are replaced by a “culture critic” whose discourse is eclectic.
